Muhūrta — the shape of a good beginning
Every act carries the seed of the moment it began. Muhūrta is the classical Indian science of choosing that seed.
Time is not uniform
Western intuition treats time as an even substrate: any hour is as good as any other, and what matters is what you do with it. Classical Jyotish disagrees. It sees time as textured — each moment carrying a specific quality of the five limbs (pañcāṅga): the day (vāra), the lunar day (tithi), the constellation the Moon is in (nakṣatra), the Sun-Moon relationship (yoga), and the half-tithi (karaṇa).
When you begin something — sign the contract, take the first step, break ground — the natal chart of that beginning inherits the qualities of the moment. This is called the praśna or ārambha chart, and Muhūrta is the applied art of choosing a beginning whose chart is favorable to the intent.
The five limbs, briefly
| Limb | What it governs |
|---|---|
| Vāra (weekday) | The presiding planet — Sunday is Sun, Monday Moon, etc. |
| Tithi | The Moon's phase — waxing supports growth, waning supports release. |
| Nakṣatra | The lunar mansion the Moon occupies — 27 flavors, each with its own work. |
| Yoga | 27 Sun-Moon angular relationships — some auspicious, some to avoid. |
| Karaṇa | Half-tithi — finer texture of the day. |
When four of five agree with the act, the muhūrta is called śuddha — clean.
The two rules that matter most
- Match the act to the tithi. Beginnings that need to grow — a business, a course of study, a marriage — take the waxing (śukla) fortnight. Endings — closing a chapter, filing a dissolution, letting a role go — take the waning (kṛṣṇa) fortnight.
- Match the act to the nakṣatra. Puṣya nakṣatra is universally auspicious for beginnings that require nourishment (of a project, of a relationship, of a body). Anurādhā is for alliances. Hasta is for skilled work with the hands. Bharaṇī is not for beginnings you wish to keep — its energy is transformative.
The reason we teach this
Muhūrta is not superstition. It is the recognition that we don't control outcomes — we control the quality of the entry. The rest is fate meeting effort. Choosing a clean muhūrta is the traditional way of saying: I honored the beginning. What comes now, comes.
From the tradition
शुभे मुहूर्ते सम्पन्नं कर्म सिद्ध्यति नान्यथा । कालो हि बलवान् लोके सर्वकर्मसु सर्वदा ॥
śubhe muhūrte sampannaṁ karma sidhyati nānyathā kālo hi balavān loke sarva-karmasu sarvadā
We don't control outcomes — we control the quality of the entry.
